Household income in 2008 was $50,303 down from the 1998 figure of $51,295. The chart per state is here. It’s a disturbing trend but the by state data is all over the map. It’s hard to see any kind of trend. According to the census (in the linked article), this is the first time in four decades that median income has decreased. I guess the rich got richer, the middle class got squeezed out and the poor keep getting poorer.
